Fix WhatsApp “File Format Not Supported” for Videos
Why WhatsApp rejects some videos (MKV, AVI, HEVC, WEBM, large files) and how to convert them to a WhatsApp-compatible MP4 in under a minute, free.
Tools used in this guide
WhatsApp shows “The file format is not supported” or sends a video that plays as a black screen when the video uses a format the receiving phone can't decode. The reliable fix is to convert it to the one combination every phone plays.
What WhatsApp actually supports
WhatsApp reliably plays MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio. These commonly fail:
- MKV, AVI, FLV, WMV, WEBM containers (movie downloads, screen recorders, old cameras).
- HEVC/H.265 video, which newer iPhones and some Android phones record by default. It's often fine on the sender's phone but not the receiver's.
- Very high frame rates or 10-bit HDR video.
- Files over about 16 MB sent as regular media (WhatsApp compresses or refuses them).
Fix 1 — Convert to WhatsApp MP4 (most reliable)
- Open the WhatsApp Video Converter.
- Choose the video. The defaults are already WhatsApp-safe: MP4, H.264, AAC, 720p.
- Tap Convert, then share the new file to WhatsApp.
Fix 2 — Make it smaller than 16 MB
Use the Video Compressor and tap 16 MB · WhatsApp. The compressor calculates the bitrate and resolution needed to fit. Trimming parts you don't need helps the most.
Fix 3 — Send as a document
Attach → Document → pick the video. Documents up to 2 GB are sent untouched, but the receiver has to download and open the file instead of watching it inline.
WhatsApp Status videos
Statuses are vertical and limited to 60 seconds. In the converter, tap the WA Status preset (9:16, 720p, first 60 s).
Prevent the problem on iPhone
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes your iPhone record H.264 instead of HEVC. Files are bigger, but they play everywhere.
