How to Reduce Video Size Without Losing Quality

The 5 settings that shrink videos the most — resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec and length — and how to compress any video to a target size like 16 MB or 25 MB.

Tools used in this guide

Phone videos are huge because they're recorded at high bitrates, made for editing rather than sharing. A 1-minute 4K clip can be 400 MB. With the right settings, the same clip can be 15–25 MB and still look sharp on any screen.

The 5 levers, from biggest to smallest effect

  1. Length: file size grows with duration. Trimming 30% of the video saves 30% of the size. Use the Video Cutter first.
  2. Resolution: 4K → 1080p cuts pixels by 75%. On phones, 720p looks nearly identical to 1080p for most content.
  3. Bitrate: the amount of data per second, and the main quality-vs-size dial. The compressor's target size mode sets it for you.
  4. Frame rate: 60 fps → 30 fps roughly halves the frames to encode. Keep 60 only for sports and gameplay.
  5. Audio: mono 96 kbps is plenty for speech. Remove audio entirely for silent clips.

Compress to an exact size

  1. Open the Video Compressor.
  2. Choose your video and tap a target: 10 MB (Discord), 16 MB (WhatsApp), 25 MB (Gmail), or type any number.
  3. Press Convert. The tool divides the size by the duration to get the bitrate, reserves room for audio, and lowers the resolution automatically if the bitrate is too low for HD.

Rule-of-thumb bitrates (H.264)

ResolutionGood qualitySize per minute
1080p4–5 Mbps~30–38 MB
720p2–2.8 Mbps~15–21 MB
480p1–1.2 Mbps~8–9 MB
360p0.6–0.7 Mbps~5 MB

Why “without losing quality” is (mostly) possible

Re-encoding always discards some data. But phone recordings use 3–5× more bitrate than viewers can perceive, so compression mostly removes data you'd never notice. Only heavy compression of fast motion or fine detail (confetti, water, foliage) shows blockiness.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my compressed video still big?
Long videos need more data. Trim it, choose 480p, or lower the frame rate.
Is HEVC smaller?
Yes, HEVC is about 40% smaller at the same quality, but many devices and apps can't play it. H.264 MP4 is the safe choice for sharing.
