How to Open and Convert AMR Call Recordings
AMR files from Android call recorders and old phones won't play on most computers or iPhones. Here's how to play them and convert AMR to MP3 or M4A free.
Tools used in this guide
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a speech codec designed for mobile networks. Android call recorders, Samsung voice recorders (.3GA) and older Nokia phones save audio as AMR because it's tiny. The catch: Windows Media Player, macOS Music, iPhone and most web apps can't play it.
Convert AMR to MP3 (works everywhere)
- Open the AMR to MP3 converter.
- Select one or many .amr files. Batch conversion is supported.
- Press Convert. For many files, use Download all (ZIP).
Call recordings are private. Because the conversion runs in your browser, the recordings are never uploaded anywhere.
Improve the recording
- Quiet caller? Use the Volume Booster with Auto-level on. It lifts the quiet side of the call more than the loud side.
- Only need part of the call? Trim it in the Audio Cutter.
Play AMR without converting
VLC Media Player (free, Windows/Mac/Linux/iPhone/Android) plays AMR directly. Converting is better when you need to share, email or archive the recording.
AMR-NB vs AMR-WB
AMR-NB (8 kHz) is “phone quality”. AMR-WB (16 kHz, .awb) is “HD voice”. Both convert the same way. Converting to MP3 doesn't add quality, but it makes the file playable everywhere.
