iPhone Video Not Playing on Windows or Android? Fix HEVC
Why iPhone MOV videos show a black screen or 'codec not supported' on Windows, Android and TVs, and how to convert HEVC to H.264 MP4 for free.
Tools used in this guide
Since iOS 11, iPhones save video in HEVC (H.265) inside a .MOV file to save storage. HEVC is efficient, but Windows needs a paid codec extension to play it, many Android phones and TVs can't decode it, and some websites reject it.
Symptoms
- Black screen with audio only on Windows.
- “0xc00d5212 – item was encoded in a format that's not supported”.
- Android gallery or smart TV says unsupported file.
- Upload forms reject the .MOV.
Fix: convert to H.264 MP4
- Open the iPhone Video Converter.
- Choose the video (on iPhone: Choose files → Photo Library).
- Keep MP4 and Balanced quality. Smart mode would just copy the HEVC stream, so a quality level is needed to re-encode to H.264.
- Convert, then download or share the MP4.
Prevent it next time
iPhone Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Videos will be recorded as H.264. Also, when you AirDrop or email, iOS often converts automatically. Sharing via cable or cloud keeps HEVC.
Is HEVC bad?
No. It's excellent for storage, which is why we copy it untouched when you convert MOV → MP4 with Smart quality (instant and lossless). Convert to H.264 only when the destination can't play HEVC.
