How to Convert a PDF to an Editable Word Document

Convert PDF to DOCX free without uploading confidential files. Learn when to use editable vs exact-look mode and how to fix common layout issues.

Tools used in this guide

Need to change a few lines in a PDF contract, CV or report? Converting it to Word (DOCX) is the easiest way. Most free converters upload your file to their servers. ToolGuru's PDF to Word converts it inside your browser instead.

Steps

  1. Open PDF to Word and choose your PDF.
  2. Choose Editable text to rewrite content, or Exact look to reproduce the pages exactly (as images in Word).
  3. Press Convert to Word and open the .docx in Microsoft Word, Google Docs (File → Open → Upload), Pages or LibreOffice.
  4. When you've finished editing, save it back to PDF with Word to PDF.

What converts well

  • Great: letters, reports, contracts, CVs, articles, anything exported from Word.
  • Needs tidying: multi-column layouts, complex tables, forms.
  • Scanned PDFs: they contain pictures of text, not text, so they're converted in Exact look mode automatically.

Just need the text?

Use PDF to Text to copy content into an email, ChatGPT or a translation tool.
