ALAC is lossless, but it can't restore detail already removed by M4R's compression — the file just gets bigger. Convert when an app or editor requires ALAC.

About M4R and ALAC
M4R: M4R is the iPhone ringtone format. It is an AAC audio file (the same as M4A) with a different extension, and iOS only accepts ringtones up to 30–40 seconds long.
ALAC: ALAC is Apple's lossless format. It compresses audio to roughly half the size of WAV with zero quality loss and plays natively in Apple Music, iTunes and on every iPhone. It is saved with the .m4a extension.
